Jonah Mathews is one of the pleasant surprises in the Polish basketball league. The USC Trojans product was able to score 38 points against SLAM STAL OSTRÓW. Mathews arrived in Poland after one impressive year in the Swedish league where he averaged 21.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Overall, Mathews’s combination of size and skill makes him one of the more intriguing guards in Europe. He sat down with us to talk about his career.

How has Poland been for you so far?

It’s been good, very different from home but that’s apart of growing and playing for Anwil has been a great experience.

How would you describe your transition to Europe?

My first year last year was hard, being away from home for the first time was hard even if I was only there for 2-3 months but this year has been much easier, due to the team, the place I’m playing and things like that.

I feel a lot more comfortable with being here in my second year and knowing I have familiar people in Europe as well has been good for me.

What do you feel are your biggest strengths as a player?

My biggest strengths as a player are being able to score at all 3 levels and defend positions 1-4 as well as being able to play make as a point guard.

Who’s been your biggest influence on your basketball career?

My biggest influence on my basketball career would be my family, they have been there through everything, my dad showed me everything I know and my brother showed me the blueprint to get through college and pros.

And my mom was in gyms from when I was 7 years old watching me play driving me to every game so my family has been a huge part of my success.

Where do you see yourself 3 years from now?

In 3 years I see myself either on one of the top clubs in Europe or if I’ve worked hard enough and shown my skills to be in the NBA.

What are your expectations for the season?

My expectations for the season is to win a championship and hopefully MVP of the league.

The interview was conducted by Thomas Jones.
