A EuroBasket group stage game between Lithuania and Germany was not only a tense battle for four quarters and two overtimes. It also included a blatant error by the referees.
Late in the third quarter a technical foul was given to the German team but the game officials did not give the Lithuanians the free-throw. The hosts went on to win the game in two-overtimes by a two points. Germany improved to 3-0 while Lithuania dropped to 0-3 and is in a very difficult situation.
After the game the Baltic giants filed a protest to FIBA regarding the referees’ error but it was denied by a single judge who ruled that the protest was filed later than within 60 minutes after the game also stating that it was filed not for a reason under which a protest can be filed.
FIBA Europe has issued a statement regarding the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Group B game between Lithuania and Germany played on September 4, 2022 in Cologne, Germany.
Following the conclusion of the game, the national team of Lithuania submitted a protest regarding the failure to award a merited free-throw following the technical foul assessed on Team Germany with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter.
The Single Judge deemed the protest inadmissible as the protest reasons were delivered outside the designated time of 60 minutes after the game.
They also noted that if the protest were admissible, it would have been rejected as the reason presented is not one of the reasons under which a protest can be filed.
