Defamatory language usage:“Anti-deportation industry” is unword of the year 2018
The unwort of the year 2018 is “Anti-Abschiebe-Industrie”. This was announced by the jury on Tuesday in Darmstadt. “The term implies those who legally support rejected asylum seekers and consider judicial remand, the intention to protect even refugees who have become criminal and thus want to make money on a large scale,” said the jury spokeswoman Nina Janich, a professor at the Technical University Darmstadt.
Proposals collected on the Internet
The annual Freestyle of the Year is meant to draw attention to “undifferentiated, veiling or defamatory public usage”. It has been taking place since 1991. Last year, the choice fell on “alternative facts”. Responsible for the widely acclaimed selection of the spokesman is a jury of four linguists and a journalist, which is complemented by an annually changing guest.
The action itself is institutionally independent. It aims to promote a conscious use of language by pointing to terms that discriminate, mislead or violate democratic principles. The jury selects proposals that anyone can submit on the Internet. (Afp)
