Strife in the Union
:Causa Knabe is a tough test for the Berlin CDU
The Berlin CDU does not come to rest in the Causa boy. The case has long had the makings of an ordeal by the largest opposition faction in the House of Representatives. There is still a dispute over the question of how the party is dealing with the dismissal of the founding director and managing director of the Stasi memorial in Hohenschnhausen, Hubertus Knabe. The historian is accused of ignoring sexual harassment of women at the memorial for years. A key figure in the internal CDU dispute over Hubertus Knabe is Dieter Dombrowski, Vice President of the Brandenburg State Parliament (CDU). On Wednesday evening he was a guest at an event of the Charlottenburger delegate Andreas Statzkowski.Zu DDR times sat Dombrowski for escape attempt in prison.
Today he is federal chairman of the Union of Victims’ Associations of the Communist Tyranny (UOKG) – and in this capacity also a member of the Foundation’s Advisory Board. He has supported Knabe’s release. It’s not a plot, Dombrowski said on Wednesday. “Boy did not fulfill many of his duties.” Thus, there were no women’s representatives in the memorial, although this was mandatory. Likewise, there had been a lack of prevention mechanisms. Thus, the allegations were so massive that the Senate for a while no volunteers have sent to Hohenschnhausen. When then again a young woman took the post, she was promptly sexually harassed. According to Dombrowski, he had repeatedly been warned of misconduct by his associates and deficiencies in the structure of the memorial, but he had always ignored this.
After a long period of hesitation, the Berlin CDU parliamentary group decided last week to submit a petition to a parliamentary committee of inquiry, which will inform the events and structures in the memorial. On Wednesday Dombrowski showed that he does not think much of it. But: “If indeed 25 percent of deputies consider a personnel decision as a reason for a committee of inquiry – okay …” Critics see the dismissal of Knabe an intrigue of the Foundation Council, Culture Senator Klaus Lederer (left).
Culture Minister Monika Grtters had approved the dismissal of Hubertus Knabe
The Saxon CDU member of parliament Arnold Vaatz speaks of a “decapitation” of the memorial. The problem of the CDU: The controversial in their own ranks party leader and Minister of State Monika Grtters has agreed to the dismissal. Group leader Burkard Dregger has played down the topic for a long time. He considered a committee of inquiry, one of the opposition’s harshest weapons, superfluous. At least since the faction calls for a committee, the Causa boy threatens to become a Causa Dregger.
Whether Dregger survives this is by no means certain. Dregger, brought by Grtters only in 2010 in the Berlin CDU, had prevailed surprisingly in the summer against the well-networked deputies and ex-Senator Mario Czaja. How strong his position actually is is difficult to assess.
