:Example of the damage to the discourse culture
For the outgoing Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick it was probably an opportunity for the political positioning of the festival when he invited AfD members and members of the party specifically for a free visit to the cinema. Movies are always political as well, and what could be more appropriate to carry out conflicting views quite directly in front of the screen? The exclusion of AfD-oriented people, such as some theater companies have propagated in the past, did not seem to be an option for the Berlinale.

The supposedly generous gesture, however, was not free of paternalistic features, with which Kosslick intended, not least, to give the addressed party historical tutoring. Roberta Grossman’s film about the secret underground archive of the Warsaw Ghetto had been included in the Berlinale program at short notice, Kosslick’s demonstrative gesture towards AfD was clearly to be understood as a commentary on the frivolous, often cynical treatment of the party with the history of the Holocaust.
The incident at Kino International, however, shows how difficult it is in a heated social atmosphere to enter into an honest and open dialogue. Whatever may have happened exactly in Berlin-Mitte, now takes a back seat, where it is all about beating immediate capital from the mixed situation of hatred, politically intended violence and the favor of the victim role. As another example of the damage to discourse culture, the incident is also a defeat for the democratic public.
