Trieste –

A tourist sleeping in a hammock has to pay hefty penalties in Italy. The Austrian had his mat stretched between two trees on a popular city beach in Trieste, the police said on Thursday. Because this was a violation of the green area regulation, the 52-year-old had to pay 300 euros. After that, a storm of indignation broke out on the Internet. “Absurd punishment” or “give him back the money immediately,” it said in comments on Friday.

Time and again, curious penalties for tourists in Italy cause a sensation especially in summer. For example, just this week, the city of Rome imposed a fine of 500 euros on a man who had bathed as a Roman senator in the Trevi Fountain. (AP)
