Osnabrck –

During the collision between a regional train and a street cleaning vehicle near Osnabrck, a person was fatally injured on Friday morning. At least ten of the approximately 150 train passengers were slightly injured, according to police. The platoon driver suffered a shock. Because of the accident, the train was blocked in both directions for hours, the long-distance traffic was diverted.

The accident occurred at a railroad crossing in Bissendorf not far from the city limits to Osnabrck. The driver of the cleaning vehicle was busy with an oil spill on the road, as the regional train of the Eurobahn drove on the way from Bielefeld to the Dutch Hengelo on the half-leveled railroad crossing in the truck. The train pushed the truck about 150 meters ahead. The cleaning cart was clamped in front of a noise barrier.

The broadcaster NDR 1 Niedersachsen reported, citing several passengers, that the cleaning car had been used on the railroad crossing when the warning lights began to flash and the half-sided barriers went down. The engine driver had several times given a warning signal and tried by emergency braking to stop the train. “The exact accident is still under investigation,” said a police spokeswoman. (AP)
