The demo in Wedding was terminated after reaching the end point around 20:20 clock by the demo line, police said. There were no major incidents. “That was absolutely peaceful – zero arrests,” said a police spokesman contentedly.

All traffic would be set now, it said. This means that the traffic in the affected streets slowly starts rolling again.

On Tuesday evening, thousands of people want to celebrate in the Mauerpark in Prenzlauer Berg as well as in other parks in Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. At the same time, left-wing autonomists want to meet at the corner of Rigaer Strae and Liebigstrae, the so-called village square of the scene in front of the formerly occupied houses, for Walpurgis Night. At former Walpurgis night celebrations in the area, there were occasional material damage and attacks on police officers. (AP)

May 1: The demo routes

The attention of the police applies this year, especially the alternative neighborhood Friedrichshain and the villa district Grunewald. Friedrichshain wants to pull the traditional left-wing demonstration on the evening of May 1, because there are the formerly occupied and still contested houses in the Rigaer Strae and Liebigstrae – important symbols of the left scene. The Grunewald is targeted by a satirical demonstration at noon on May 1, because the area is considered a retreat for the wealthy and conservative. (AP)

Where exactly the different routes lead, you can follow in our interactive map:

Berlin police are ready for 1 May

The Berlin police see themselves prepared for the first of May in the capital – and that, even though she does not even know which of the announced 15 events on the day actually take place in the city and how many participants will appear in each place. He hopes for a “peaceful but also political May 1,” said Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD), but the police were also “prepared for all conceivable scenarios”. (Elmar Sagittarius)

Music, grills and stalls are prohibited on the day, said the district office Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. So the green area and the residents to be protected from the spontaneous parties of thousands of young people. Instead, the park should be a “place of relaxation for all Kreuzbergers and guests”. The motto is: “A normal day in the park”. (AP)

MyFest in Kreuzberg: more politics

The Myfest in Kreuzberg is this year for the 16th time. Local residents organized it for the first time in 2003 to counteract the riots on 1 May: A neighborhood party with discussion stages was supposed to take the place of rioters. A concept that worked better and better over the years and has become a popular crowd puller with over 50,000 visitors.

In recent years, however, the MyFest has become more and more discredited. Critics characterize the pacification increasingly as Ballermann and the residents complained about especially about garbage, noise and the non-political orientation of the neighborhood celebration. The organizers have responded to this criticism, 2019 MyFest is to be quieter and more political: It has reduced the number of stages, there are fewer stands and at 21 clock clock should be over. May 1: “Labor Day of the working class”

Traditionally May 1 is the “Labor Day of the working class”. It goes against capitalism and exploitation. For years, this fight was politically led, but then discovered the violent left-wing extremist scene the day for themselves. The consequences were battles with the police, burning cars and immense damage. How May 1 has changed since 1987, you can read here. (LAD).

May 1 in Berlin: What else is going on

For those who do not feel like rioting and rioting, there are many alternatives in town. The Neukllner May Days in the Volkspark Hasenheide have begun, the Strandbad Weiensee opens the bathing season on 1 May and the largest family festival in Berlin takes place at the Brandenburg Gate. If you prefer dancing, you can stop by the Ipse Club and end the day with relaxed electro beats and views of the Spree. (BC)
